The Backstage Chalet is one of the most unique luxury ski chalets in the Alps, let alone Zermatt. The chalet is based on an old regional Valais house dating from the 1940s, which architect Heinz Julen has modernized and extended by two storeys in-keeping with the chalet nature of the building. This extension has been constructed exclusively from local larch and designed to include large areas of glass, providing a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view over Zermatt village and the Matterhorn.
The chalet sleeps 10-11 people and has 5 double bedrooms, one of them containing an additional loft bed, making it ideal for an additional child. The stunning open plan living space, housed within the spectacular top floor, provides the living room, dining room and kitchen space. The fireplace provides a cosy Alpine ambiance in this ultra-modern mountain residence.
At the opposite end of the fireplace is the crowning glory of this luxury chalet! Heinz Julen has devised and built a spectacular whirlpool – a fascinatingly small feat of engineering that is probably unique among its kind worldwide. The whirlpool accommodates up to 6 people and at the press of a button the roof opens and the pool is hydraulically lifted into the sky above Zermatt! The view from above the chalet is simply stunning and provides an experience unlike any other in Zermatt.
The 5 bedrooms are arranged over the two floors below the living space. To the cellar floor and this luxury chalet has more facilities with a small private home cinema and games room that is equipped with a workstation, toilet and shower. Next door is the ski room with heated ski boot racks, and all these rooms have access by a private lift.
The chalet has been decorated with furniture from the Heinz Julen studio in Zermatt and decorated by contemporary art from Zermatt’s art galleries. The chalet blends the authenic heritage of a mountain chalet together with modern, cutting edge design and architecture. The Backstage chalet, full of originality and innovation, is redefining what a luxury ski chalet can be.
Backstage Chalet is located only a 5 minute walk from the Matterhorn Glacier lift station and ski slopes. The centre of Zermatt and the church square are only a 4 minute walk away. A stay at the chalet also affords you complimentary access to the wellness centre and cinema at the Backstage Hotel Zermatt.
