This summer, 2015, work finally got underway on the first stage of a €16 million two year project to redevelop the Solaise sector of Val d’Isère.
This world famous sector of the Espace Killy is directly reached from the Front de Neige at the centre of the resort.
70,000m3, or in other words, a million tonnes of earth will have been moved to reshape the summit and create a new mid-mountain station. A new beginners area is to be created at the top of the Solaise Express, with the button lift and Lac chair lift replaced by two covered magic carpets, making it the perfect place to learn to ski or board this winter!
For this winter, the current four-person chair lift “Solaise Express” along with the cable car will continue to provide the uplift to the top of the mountain. Fast forward one year to November 2016 and both of these will be replaced by one lift, a new gondola with 91 cabins each able to carry 10 people. This fantastic new lift will be resplendent with heated seats and WiFi access so that you can post your latest snowy images to your friends and family back home.
This new gondola will increase capacity on the Solaise by 40% and can carry up to 3,600 people per hour with a journey time of 7 minutes. This increased capacity should end peak season bottlenecks and the redevelopment create fantastic new facilities for all levels of skiers and snowboarders as well as those on foot.
