Sopris House

Luxury Chalet in Crested Butte, United States
8 Catered

A sister property to Scarp Ridge Lodge, Sopris House is full of history and character, just like Crested Butte. The original 1882 building infamously became the Spritzer Bar—a saloon bought by Martin Spritzer in 1924 and operated by Slovenian immigrants. Reopened in September of 2013, the 3,200-square-foot home’s cosy vibe is the perfect smaller twin to Scarp Ridge Lodge.

Location is key here—with CB’s shops and restaurants a walk away. And during winter, backcountry stashes are accessed right out the backyard via our tricked-out snowcat aka “The Tucker.”

It’s true we all wind up in the kitchen during group gatherings, and with the Sopris House open layout you’ll find yourself there often. The outdoor courtyard is where guests download the day’s adventure, be it in the copper hot tub or around the fire pit. Hit the Sopris Bar with its vintage jukebox and pool table to fuel late-night Colorado throw downs.

The Sopris House’s open kitchen and adjacent living room is where the culinary magic happens—watch your private chef in action. Marble counters have been sourced from the nearby tiny town of Marble, Colorado, and can seat 10 at the family-style dining room table.

A well-stocked, access-anytime fridge is available, and drip coffee, tea and espresso are available throughout the day. Design highlights include reclaimed wood floors, sourced from a sugar factory in the southeast. Reclaimed beams are from barns in the Midwest.

The Courtyard is one of our favourite Sopris House hang spaces, with a sauna, copper hot tub and dipping pool to restore weary muscles. It has outdoor seating with a fire pit, café lights, a Big Green Egg for grilling Colorado cuisine, and shade provided by gorgeous aspen trees. Outdoor speakers tie it all together—with Colorado-inspired playlists always on deck.

The Sopris bar is the perfect adult zone, with all the entertainment needed. Powder room, pool table, a vintage jukebox, TV, and surround sound system. This private, non-tended bar opens to the courtyard. Perfect for chilling the media room features a TV and game console, fully stocked minibar, and bean bag chairs.

Sopris is meant for both the go-big-or-go-home alpha, and the laid-back, tenacious traveller. Ideal for families and small groups of friends, the house is also an add-on to Scarp Ridge Lodge if you require additional rooms. Evenings here are marked by incredible Colorado sunsets and star gazing.

WHAT CAN A TRIP LOOK LIKE?

DAY 1 – CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Get outfitted with custom Wagner skis and top-of-the-line gear essentials. Ride the resort’s lifts and warm up those ski legs. Traverse on-piste, groomed runs or check out the expert steep-and-deep terrain. If desired, a private ski lesson with a professional ski instructor can get you prepped for the week. Have lunch on-mountain and après at Sopris Lodge’s slope-side Crested Butte condo.

DAY 2 – RESORT OR CAT SKIING

Time to challenge yourself. Whether hitting the resort for round two, or opting to tackle snowcat skiing, epic turns are the only demands of the day. Irwin guides take this day to assess skill levels, client’s goals for the week, and crack a few jokes along the way. After all, skiing is made for smiling.

DAY 3-5 – SNOWCAT SKIING

The lodge’s tricked-out Tucker snowcat picks you up right in front of the lodge. This 45-minute alpine limo (think flat screen TV, mood lights, and custom playlists en-route) transfers guests to Irwin. At your on-mountain chalet, boot up, meet your guides, and receive a final safety briefing. Next up? Load snowcat #2. It’s time to ride off-piste, untouched powder. Mornings allow for 4-5 runs prior to a gourmet catered lunch, topped with another 4-5 afternoon descents. Following a festive après-ski session, re-load Tucker and head back to town.

DAY 6 – HYBRID BACKCOUNTRY TOUR – SCARP RIDGE TO MT. EMMONS

After being outfitted with lightweight alpine touring boots, a snowcat or snowmobile will take you from Irwin to the 12,000-foot Scarp Ridge. Skin up 800 feet on a dramatic ridge tour to Mt. Emmons, with 360-degree Elk Mountain views. Your reward? 2,500 vert. Guides will give tips on ski touring while strategizing the best descent. Charge down the classic Red Lady Bowl or Red Lady glades.

Sopris House strives to custom-make powerful experiences that impact the people who impact the world. Whether cat skiing in cold smoke powder or nordic skiing world class trails, Scarp Ridge Lodge is a different kind of escape. Combining amazing food and lodging with customised guided outdoor activities for guests of all ages and skill levels. A stay here represents a new standard in experiential travel.
