Scarp Ridge Lodge

Luxury Chalet in Crested Butte, United States
18 Catered

Located in downtown Crested Butte, Scarp Ridge is a 13,500 square-foot lodge that is within walking distance to restaurants and shopping, yet allows easy access to National Forest and Crested Butte wilderness. Scarp Ridge Lodge is formerly the Croatian Hall, where miners would gather for drinking and dancing during the silver mining heyday in Crested Butte.

The lodge is your home. Think open floor plan, stocked kitchen and pantry, and flat screen TV slideshows from your day’s adventure. Guest-controlled, Crestron entertainment systems are set to music preferences, while coffee and a pre-heated sauna each morning are the perfect preparation for tackling the days’ trails and powder snow.

The Lodge sleeps up to 18 guests in five king bedrooms with steam showers and pewter soaking tubs, a bunk room with 2 queen, 2 full & 3 twin beds and a single nanny bedroom connecting to the bunk room. The chalet’s facilities are almost as endless as the powder snow, with a library, bar and great media room with HD projector and screen and a children’s playroom.

The chalet’s spa facilities would rival a 5 star hotel, with an indoor salt water swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna, massage room as well as gym equipped with cardio equipment and pilates reformer. Perhaps the crowing glory of the property is the roof top terrace that has the best views in the house. Enjoy the uninterrupted views over to Mt. Crested Butte from the copper hot tub during aprés while you enjoy a Colorado microbrew. A heater keeps you warm during chilly evenings, and prayer flags and an outdoor sound system add to the ambiance.

After earning your powder turns or enjoying the local groomed slopes, Scarp Ridge Lodge guests like to work up an appetite. In-house meals are locally sourced and seasonally inspired. Whether dining in or venturing out, you, and your soulfood spirit, will be well fed.

A trip to Scarp Ridge Lodge is definitely all about the stunning cat skiing on offer. Located just 13 miles west of Crested Butte, is Irwin, a meteorological anomaly, meaning it snows A LOT there. Irwin often sees three times the amount of snow as Crested Butte, averaging nearly 500 inches a season. This means deep powder, and then some. The town of Irwin sits in the middle of the mountains – very remote and only accessible by snowcat or snowmobile.

So what does a trip look like here? We’ll you can ski or snowboard every day, and during storm days head to the protection of trees and glades for better visibility. And once you step off the cat and onto Scarp Ridge, it’s go time. The cat skiing operation rivals the likes of the Wasatch range in Utah or British Columbia, and they have an active avalanche forecasting and mitigation program, which uses explosives for testing slopes. This keeps you skiing steep terrain consistently and confidently.

You will typically bag 8-10 runs per day, breaking for lunch. Expect aprés cocktails and snacks at the on-mountain chalet at day’s end. It is also possible for beginners and kids to ski the cat roads while trying powder, too. Three guides per group allows for different skills levels and to ski varying terrain.

Plenty of Scarp Ridge Lodge guests are hard-chargers—sending it all day while in Crested Butte or CB as the locals call it. When it’s hang time back at the lodge, hospitality is paramount, so you can get right back out there, rested and ready to push yourself one step further. Your wake-up call is simply to embrace authentic, shared Colorado moments.

Activities available include: Cat skiing, resort skiing, backcountry skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice skating.

WHAT CAN A TRIP LOOK LIKE?

DAY 1 – CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Get outfitted with custom Wagner skis and top-of-the-line gear essentials. Ride the resort’s lifts and warm up those ski legs. Traverse on-piste, groomed runs or check out the expert steep-and-deep terrain. If desired, a private ski lesson with a professional ski instructor can get you prepped for the week. Have lunch on-mountain and après at Scarp Ridge Lodge’s slope-side Crested Butte condo.

DAY 2 – RESORT OR CAT SKIING

Time to challenge yourself. Whether hitting the resort for round two, or opting to tackle snowcat skiing, epic turns are the only demands of the day. Irwin guides take this day to assess skill levels, client’s goals for the week, and crack a few jokes along the way. After all, skiing is made for smiling.

DAY 3-5 – SNOWCAT SKIING

The lodge’s tricked-out Tucker snowcat picks you up right in front of the lodge. This 45-minute alpine limo (think flat screen TV, mood lights, and custom playlists en-route) transfers guests to Irwin. At your on-mountain chalet, boot up, meet your guides, and receive a final safety briefing. Next up? Load snowcat #2. It’s time to ride off-piste, untouched powder. Mornings allow for 4-5 runs prior to a gourmet catered lunch, topped with another 4-5 afternoon descents. Following a festive après-ski session, re-load Tucker and head back to town.

DAY 6 – HYBRID BACKCOUNTRY TOUR – SCARP RIDGE TO MT. EMMONS

After being outfitted with lightweight alpine touring boots, a snowcat or snowmobile will take you from Irwin to the 12,000-foot Scarp Ridge. Skin up 800 feet on a dramatic ridge tour to Mt. Emmons, with 360-degree Elk Mountain views. Your reward? 2,500 vert. Guides will give tips on ski touring while strategizing the best descent. Charge down the classic Red Lady Bowl or Red Lady glades.

Scarp Ridge Lodge strives to custom-make powerful experiences that impact the people who impact the world. Whether cat skiing in cold smoke powder or nordic skiing world class trails, Scarp Ridge Lodge is a different kind of escape.

Combining amazing food and lodging with customised guided outdoor activities for guests of all ages and skill levels, a stay here represents a new standard in experiential travel.

    Red Lady - Master Suite

From the west-facing windows, view the iconic Mt. Emmons, fondly known as Red Lady. Vaulted ceilings give this room an additional sense of space. Climb the wrought-iron ladder (made by a local blacksmith) to the loft and read, catch up on emails, or lounge. An en-suite bathroom is adjacent to the bed.

    Butte

Tucked on the south-eastern side of the Lodge, this junior master suite is the perfect room for solitude. From bed, see Mt. Crested Butte’s rocky peak. Butte shares a south-facing roof deck with our Whetstone room. Without a TV to distract you, Butte is primed to help you relax, recover from a busy day of adventures, and soak in the late afternoon sun on the deck.

    Whetstone

Scarp Ridge Lodge’s most private room. Enter through a sitting room with TV, additional closet, Moroccan rug and the type of couch that inspires an impromptu nap. Great for young families, the bedroom and bath are around the corner from the sitting room. The blue tweeds and accents of this room add a sense of calm.

    Beckwith

Beckwith is south facing and gets plenty of natural light. A wrought-iron bed allows for views of Gibson’s Ridge and Colorado bluebird sky. There’s lots of space, with two chairs beneath the windows and warm red and brown tones throughout the room.

    Marcellina

Bright in both décor and natural light, with large, west-facing windows. An adjoining private sitting area has bookshelves, a TV, closet, and minibar. Enjoy views of Red Lady from the steam shower or bathtub.

    Bunk

The perfect place to reconnect with cousins, family friends and siblings. We have families that call ahead each year to make sure that bunk bed assignments aren’t divvied up until all kids have arrived. Staff will label each bed with a special chalkboard sign so that each kid can stake their claim. Built to resemble the game Snakes and Ladders, the two- and three-story bunk beds and loft are filled with games. Includes an adjoining bathroom with a smaller tub for kids and nanny’s room.

    Peanut

Connected to the Bunk room, this cosy hideaway is perfect for the au pair (or that freeloader looking for a crash pad. Every group has one).

    Gothic

Doubling as the yoga studio/massage room, Gothic has potential to turn into an additional bedroom, depending on the size and needs of your group.
